性质：包括三水铝石、一水硬铝石、一水软铝石、赤铁矿、高岭石、蛋白石等多种矿物的混合体，成分变化很大。一般铝土矿中含Al2O340.0%-75.0%，常含有微量镓。通常呈致密块状、豆状、鲕状和土状等集合体。颜色视所含成分而定，一般为白色、灰色、灰黄、黄绿、淡红、褐色等。无光泽。硬度1-3。密度2-3。其中三水铝石（gibbsite）又称水铝氧石，成分为Al（OH）3，单斜晶系，通常呈细鳞片状集合体；一水硬铝（diaspore;empholite）又称硬水铝矿，成分α-AIO（OH），常含Fe、Mn，斜方晶系，多呈细鳞片状集合体，硬度大（6-7）；一水软铝石(boehmite)又称勃姆铝矿，成分γ-AlO(OH)，斜方晶系，常呈隐晶质块体或胶态。铝土矿可用来提铝以及制造耐火材料、矾土水泥、人造刚玉和各种铝化合物。
